World Englishes Today: Towards a Pluricentric Approach of Proficiency Testing

Given the fact that one of important topics in modern sociolinguistics today is globalisation English (Mesthrie & Bhatt, 2008), aim present paper twofold. First, it seeks to discuss extent which spread around world has resulted emergence new linguistic varieties or World Englishes (Mourchid, 2019) and how “no longer single base authority, prestige normativity” 2008, p. 3). Second, also provide “a rationale for proficiency testing subscribes view accepting as global target language requires a framework beyond monolithic EFL ESL-based tests” (Al-Kadi, 2022, 39). This being said, current calls shift paradigm from monocentric approach, conceives language, pluricentric approach celebrates variation exhibited better reflects sociolinguistic reality present-day English, which, turn, trend needed where diverse compete struggle find their ways classrooms.
